NRC Soft on Risk Assessment, GAO Says

Law360, New York (May 29, 2012, 6:01 PM ET) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission does not require operational nuclear reactors to use the most up-to-date method of risk assessment to determine the threats posed by natural disasters, according to a report the Government Accountability Office released Tuesday.

The report found that while in 1991 the NRC requested that nuclear licensees use probabilistic risk assessment to determine their reactors’ vulnerability to natural disasters, there is no statutory requirement demanding that they apply PRA.
