U.S. Negotiators Put Pressure on Australia to Tighten IP Laws

Law360, New York (December 02, 2003, 12:00 AM ET) -- Australian internet companies and consumer advocates fear the government will strike a deal with the U.S. to adopt legislation mimicking the Digital Millennium Copyright Act as part of the ongoing Free Trade Agreement negotiations, the Australian Financial Review reported Tuesday.

Australian copyright owners, particularly in the music industry, have voiced concern over what they see as lax enforcement of intellectual property rights in Australia.
