Public Defender To Rep Stanford In Fraud Case

Law360, New York (September 15, 2009, 6:02 PM ET) -- After shuffling through several counsel changes, former billionaire and accused fraudster Robert Allen Stanford will now be represented by a public defender against charges that he masterminded a $7 billion Ponzi scheme.

Michael Sokolow, an assistant federal public defender in Houston, filed a notice of appearance signifying his representation of Stanford on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

The question of legal counsel for Stanford has been a sticking point in the proceedings.
