A Pennsylvania federal judge on Tuesday sent Pittsburgh's lawsuit challenging the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's tax-free status back to state court, despite UPMC's arguments that the suit violated its Fourteenth Amendment rights.

The city of Pittsburgh on Monday hit back at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's bid to dismiss its challenge to the health care system's tax-exempt status, saying the move was a transparent attempt to avoid the federal suit being remanded to Pennsylvania state court.
