“It’s good to be the king” But is it good to be the judge? Not according to our Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Richard Wagner. His Honour noted recently at a news conference that it’s “very difficult” to be a judge. Fewer lawyers are applying to join the bench as the job does not pay enough. The annual salary for federally appointed judges is a meagre $396,700. The chief also notes that furthermore conditions generally are “deteriorating” as support resources are insufficient.

SCC rules on interplay of informer privilege & open courts in so-called secret trial case
The Supreme Court of Canada says no “secret” trial occurred during the in-camera prosecution of a confidential police informer in Quebec, but it has ordered 9-0 that a redacted trial judgment should be made public, which contains no information that might identify the police informer in breach of what the top court has previously described as the “extremely broad and powerful” informer privilege.

Privacy Commissioner tables annual report on privacy protection initiatives
The Privacy Commissioner of Canada has tabled his annual report in Parliament titled Trust, innovation, and protecting the fundamental right to privacy in the digital age. The 2023-24 report outlined “key activities and achievements” that his office used regarding the protection and promotion of Canadians’ fundamental right to privacy.

Court rules password sharing for subscription constituted fair dealing in 'landmark decision'
In what one copyright law expert is describing as a huge win for copyright user rights in Canada, the Federal Court has found that Parks Canada employees who shared the password for a single account to access a subscription-based news site were engaged in fair dealing under the Copyright Act and did not infringe copyright law.

SiriusXM Canada agrees to pay $3.3M fine for drip pricing in subscription plans
Satellite radio and streaming service provider SiriusXM Canada has agreed to pay a $3.3 million penalty after the Competition Bureau found that the company had engaged in drip pricing while advertising its satellite radio and streaming subscription plans.
