Thailand telecom regulator orders tighter SMS cross-border controls to combat scams

( October 22, 2025, 06:29 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission has directed mobile operators to implement new screening measures for SMS messages originating from abroad, following a surge in cross-border scam messages. Under the policy adopted at an Oct. 17 meeting, operators must use SMS firewall technology to detect and block suspicious content and label foreign messages with warning symbols. The NBTC said more than 1 million suspicious SMS messages per day have been intercepted since September. The measures, introduced under the emergency decree on cybercrime prevention, also require registration and Know Your Customer verification for domestic Application-to-Person SMS senders and the registration of all Simboxes by November.The full announcement follows:...
