South Korea clears state-owned rail merger with fare, capacity commitments

( August 2, 2026, 02:00 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: South Korea’s antitrust regulator has approved Korea Railroad’s acquisition of SR, concluding that the integration is unlikely to restrict competition in high-speed passenger rail despite eliminating overlap on 155 routes. The Korea Fair Trade Commission said Sunday it conducted an in-depth review because of the deal’s broad public impact, although it qualified for simplified review as a transaction between state-controlled affiliates. Korea Railroad plans to cut existing KTX fares by 10 percent to match SRT levels, add at least 17,000 weekend seats and 25 services across all routes, and extend 5 percent mileage accrual to SRT routes. The regulator and transport ministry will jointly monitor implementation for three years, with integration scheduled for September.Statement is attached (in Korean)....
