Chinese Internet regulator cracks down on AI-technology misuse in new initiative

( June 23, 2025, 02:58 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: China's cyberspace regulator announced that its first-phase crackdown on AI misuse removed over 960,000 pieces of illegal content, deactivated nearly 3,700 accounts, and processed more than 3,500 AI products, including mini-programs, apps and intelligent agents. From April to June, the initiative targeted deepfake voice and face-swapping technologies that infringe on public rights, as well as misleading practices caused by inadequate AI content labels, according to the Cyberspace Administration of China. The announcement highlighted enforcement measures by local authorities in Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Tianjin, and key platforms including Tencent, Sina Weibo, Douyin, and Alibaba's Tongyi Qwen AI model.
