South Korea moves to reinforce AI policy control with decree amendment

The revised decree, unveiled by the Ministry of Science and ICT, would empower the committee to not only coordinate strategies across ministries but also deliberate and decide on key matters including the national AI vision, mid-to-long-term strategies, individual ministry projects and policies for building and utilizing AI-related data. The amendment also expands the number of participating ministries, permits up to three vice chairs — including at least one full-time — and guarantees newly appointed civilian members a fixed two-year term. A new “AI Officer Council,” composed of vice-ministerial officials and local deputy governors, will be established to support coordination and policy implementation.
