Biometric code will come into force on Nov. 3, New Zealand privacy regulator says

( August 6, 2025, 01:01 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: New Zealand’s privacy watchdog has published its long-awaited privacy code, which creates specific privacy rules for agencies — including businesses and organizations — using biometric technologies to collect and process biometric information. The code will come into force on Nov. 3, 2025, with agencies already using biometrics having a nine-month grace period to move to the new set of rules. That transition period will end on Aug. 4, 2026. Under the new rules, biometric information is considered personal information regulated by New Zealand’s Privacy Act and includes physical or behavioral features, such as a person’s face, fingerprints, voice, keystroke patterns or how they walk. Biometric technologies covered by the regulation include facial-recognition technology and anything used to recognize who someone is, or identify other things about them, such as gender.The Office of the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner's code is attached, along with six fact sheets. ...
