Google privacy trial will be bifurcated with liability, damages phases, US judge rules

( August 6, 2025, 18:57 GMT | Official Statement) -- MLex Summary: Noting that damages in a privacy trial this month against Google "could range from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars," a federal judge in California ruled today that the trial will be bifurcated between a liability phase, followed by a phase on punitive damages if the jury decides Google violated the law and must pay them. "Considering the extent of damages inquiries already presented to the jury, the inconvenience raised by burdening them with yet more calculations, and the prejudice risked by introducing evidence of Google’s total worth, Defendant’s request to bifurcate is granted with respect to the amount of punitive damages, if any, to be awarded," US District Judge Richard Seeborg ruled.See attached document....
