Data centers challenge Europe’s electricity grid, power lobby group says

In 2024, data centers accounted for about 3 percent of Europe’s total electricity consumption, even as overall demand stagnated. Meanwhile, grid-stability costs “exploded” to €7 billion in 2024 as more renewables connected to the grid, Eurelectric said. Planning grid-capacity expansion more strategically and investing in flexibility services such as storage will be crucial, the group added.Europe’s grid operators face growing challenges in stabilizing power flows across the network due to the rapid growth of data centers, power lobby group Eurelectric said in a new study released Tuesday.
