A California federal judge has ruled that a North American Capacity Insurance Co. policy required a contractor accused of botching hundreds of homes to pay a $10,000 self-insured retention for each property, rather than for each suit filed against it.

Evanston Insurance Co. hit North American Capacity Insurance Co. with a lawsuit in California federal court on Monday in an effort to force the insurer to contribute to the defense and indemnification costs of five separate suits against a contractor accused of botching hundreds of homes.
