Miss. Delays Income Tax Deadlines A Month Amid COVID-19

Mississippi has extended the filing and payment deadlines for the state's corporate income and individual income taxes by one month to offer tax relief in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the state Department of Revenue has announced.

The state's April 15 deadline for its individual income tax and corporate income tax returns has been pushed back to May 15, the department said in Notice 2020-01 on Monday. The deadlines for estimated tax payments for the first quarter of 2020 and withholding tax payments for April are also extended to May 15, the notice said.

The department said that the state's extensions don't match the July 15 federal income tax filing and payment extensions, because Mississippi could endanger its budget if the deadlines were extended beyond the fiscal year's June 30 end date.

Many states have offered tax extensions as COVID-19 has spread across the country. On Monday, Mississippi had 320 COVID-19 cases, with one death attributed to the virus, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health.
