The U.S. Department of Justice has dropped an $83 million lawsuit claiming that the kidney dialysis unit of health care company Fresenius Medical Care AG ran a scam to overcharge Medicare, Fresenius said Friday.

A federal judge in Tennessee on Wednesday awarded the U.S. an $82.6 million judgment in a whistleblower suit brought by former Fresenius Medical Care Holdings Inc. employees accusing the dialysis care provider of overcharging Medicare for services to housebound patients.
