Japan Tops Patent Applications In China; U.S. Tops Trademark Filings

Law360, New York (October 22, 2003, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Japanese companies filed far more patent applications in China than companies from any other country, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

Japanese institutions and individuals filed a total of 18,275 applications for patent rights in China in 2002, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing statistics released by China's State Intellectual Property Office. By comparison, the U.S., Germany and South Korea, which ranked two, third, fourth, respectively, filed around 4,000 applications each.
