DOL Upholds Patriot Fine Over Unreported Roof Collapse

Law360, New York (May 23, 2011, 7:34 PM EDT) -- An administrative law judge has upheld a fine against a Patriot Coal Corp. subsidiary for failing to report hazardous work conditions after a roof collapse in a West Virginia coal mine, the U.S. Department of Labor said Monday.

The DOL's Mine Safety and Health Administration charged Pine Ridge Coal Co. LLC with committing an unwarrantable failure to comply with the law and fined the company $2,000 for failing to report the roof collapse at its Big Mountain Number 16 mine in Boone County, W.Va.
