3 GOP Sens. Look To Sink Law Of The Sea Treaty

Law360, Los Angeles (July 17, 2012, 11:02 PM EDT) -- Three Republican U.S. senators announced Monday that they will oppose ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, effectively sinking Democrat-led efforts to adopt the 30-year old international treaty this term.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sens. Rob Portman of Ohio and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire say that despite the treaty’s military and economic benefits — and support by the Department of Defense and some U.S. businesses — they have concluded it raises risks to U.S. sovereignty...
