Gray Market Inflating Cost Of Scarce Drugs, Report Says

Law360, New York (July 26, 2012, 1:33 PM EDT) -- Drug wholesalers are buying up drugs in short supply — such as cancer medication fluorouracil — and reselling them on a gray market, where they can be marked up to nearly 100 times their original price, according to a congressional report released Wednesday.

The report — the result of an investigation initiated by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., last fall and carried out by Cummings, Sens. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. and Tom Harkin, D-Iowa — found that the wholesalers buy the drugs from licensed pharmacies, or set up...
