Fla. Appeals Court Slashes $20M Award To Smoker's Family

Law360, Miami (June 12, 2013, 5:33 PM EDT) -- A Florida appeals court on Wednesday said a trial judge should have decreased a $20 million jury award against Philip Morris USA, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Liggett Group for causing the death of a smoker, saying the award was excessive.

Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal said the loss of consortium damages awards of $5 million to each of Margot Putney's three surviving children was too much considering they were all adults when she died in 1995.
