As law firms face increasing pressure to operate like businesses, more attorneys are on course to lose their equity status and face the accompanying hit to their prestige and pocketbook. But firms need to be careful how they carry out these demotions or risk damaging attorney morale, driving away productive attorneys and exposing themselves to lawsuits.
