Acer America Corp. will pay about $280 million to settle a class action alleging the computer company intentionally misled customers about the Windows operating system installed on its laptops, according to a proposed settlement filed Tuesday in California federal court.

California-based computer manufacturer Acer America Corp. on Monday reached a preliminary settlement in a proposed class action accusing it of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty for intentionally misleading customers about the presence of a genuine Microsoft Windows operating system on its laptops.
