A California federal judge preliminarily approved on Tuesday a deal that would settle computer buyers' class action lawsuit against Sony Electronics Inc. alleging it knowingly sold Vaio laptops with touchpad defects, finding it fair, reasonable and adequate.

Sony Electronics Inc. on Monday fought a sanctions bid by plaintiffs in a class action over an alleged touchpad defect in their Vaio laptops, disputing their claim that its expert had destroyed important evidence and arguing that the plaintiffs' own expert already found that evidence anyway.
