A California judge denied class certification Wednesday in a suit accusing Mercedes-Benz USA LLC of failing to notify customers about a defect in the so-called water-management system of its E-Class vehicles, saying the claims failed to meet the standards imposed last year in Wal-Mart Stores Inc. v. Dukes.

Mercedes-Benz USA LLC lost its bid Thursday to nix a putative class action alleging it failed to notify consumers about a defect in the water-management system of its E-Class vehicles, but a California federal judge said a hearing will be needed to determine whether the plaintiff has standing to sue.
