A Connecticut federal judge found Tuesday that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act violated equal protection standards of the U.S. Constitution by not offering federal benefits to all married couples, including legally married same-sex couples.

The congressional group defending the Defense of Marriage Act revealed Wednesday that it plans to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to review a First Circuit decision finding the law unconstitutional by the end of June, which would make the case the first dispute over same-sex marriage to make its way to the high court.
