Mountaire Farms Inc. on Wednesday agreed to pay $7.85 million to settle a class action in North Carolina by workers who accused the company of failing to pay them for time spent donning and doffing protective gear.

A North Carolina federal judge on Wednesday certified a class of Mountaire Farms Inc. chicken processing plant employees in a doffing-and-donning suit, allowing workers to proceed with claims regarding unpaid wages and paycheck deductions for replacement protective gear.
