A Tennessee federal judge on Monday ordered the Tennessee Valley Authority to enter mediation to determine individual damages for the more than 800 plaintiffs suing the agency over a 2008 dike failure that dumped 5.4 million cubic yards of toxic coal ash sludge into a nearby river.

A federal judge gave the Tennessee Valley Authority a boost Tuesday in consolidated lawsuits over the 2008 spill of coal ash sludge near the Watts Bar Reservoir, denying class certification to plaintiffs in two of the cases.
