National Western Agrees To Pay $21M In RICO Suit
National Western Life Insurance Co. on Tuesday agreed to a $21 million settlement that resolves a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act class action alleging it fraudulently marketed costly and poorly performing deferred annuities to the elderly.

A California federal judge on Friday rejected National Western Life Insurance Co.'s bid for summary judgment in a class action alleging the insurer had fraudulently marketed deferred annuities to the elderly, preserving the plaintiffs' federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act and state law claims.

National Western Can Record Class' Calls In RICO Suit
A federal magistrate judge in California ruled Thursday that National Western Life Insurance Co. may obtain recordings of phone calls from potential class members to the class administrator in a lawsuit alleging the insurer fraudulently marketed deferred annuities to the elderly.
