Federal environmental regulators said Tuesday that a BP PLC subsidiary will pay a $25 million civil penalty and spend $60 million on safety upgrades to resolve litigation over pipeline spills that dumped more than 5,000 barrels of oil on Alaska's North Slope in 2006.

The U.S. government has sued BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. seeking civil penalties in connection with the Prudhoe Bay oil spill, after the company pled guilty to a misdemeanor environmental crime for the spill in 2007 and was ordered to pay $20 million in criminal fines.
