A federal judge has ruled that Verizon Wireless does not need a public performance license for the songs it provides as ring tones to customers, granting the cell phone service provider summary judgment in its copyright dispute with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Performers.

Verizon Wireless has agreed to pay the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers an interim license fee of more than $5 million for songs the phone service provider uses in all its music services, including ring tones, while the two sides continue to debate how much the group should receive for its tunes.
