A D.C. federal court Thursday entirely dismissed a lawsuit brought by 186 hospitals challenging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Medicare payment calculations regarding unusually expensive patients, saying the agency has sufficiently explained the sole remaining disputed matter.

Responding to a D.C. Circuit loss, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on Thursday explained how it calculated special payments for high-cost patients and insisted that its original math correctly accounted for "turbocharging" hospitals.
