A Connecticut federal judge on Thursday awarded medical supplier Covidien PLC $176.5 million in damages after finding that Johnson & Johnson unit Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. infringed three of Covidien's patents covering ultrasonic scalpels.

A Connecticut federal judge ruled Friday that Johnson & Johnson unit Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc. couldn't shake a suit claiming it had infringed three Tyco Healthcare Group LP scalpel patents, nixing two of Ethicon's affirmative defenses.
