A federal judge has denied certification of a proposed nationwide class in a suit accusing Avco Corp. unit Lycoming Engines of making plane engines with defective crankshafts that caused power loss and in-flight engine failure.

A federal judge has granted class status to thousands of current and previous airplane owners who claim Lycoming Engines designed and built defective engine crankshafts that can cause a total loss of engine power as well as in-flight engine failures.
