Safeway has doubled down on its argument that two shoppers don't have standing to launch a proposed class action in California federal court over the grocery chain's failure to use discount card membership information to notify consumers of recalls, saying they were never harmed by the recalled food.

A California federal judge ruled Monday that supermarket chain Safeway Inc. will have to face a putative class action accusing it of violating state law by not informing customers of safety-related recalls via email.
