Sudan's transitional government said Thursday it has reached an agreement with relatives of the victims of the terrorist attack on the USS Cole in Yemen 20 years ago as part of an effort to take the country off the U.S. list of state sponsors of international terrorism.

A Virginia federal judge on Friday awarded $48 million in damages to family members of 17 U.S. Navy sailors killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, who had won an earlier lawsuit finding Sudan responsible for helping Al Qaeda carry out the attack.

A Virginia federal judge on Monday dismissed all but four family members of the 17 U.S. Navy sailors killed in the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole from a $280 million suit accusing Sudan of aiding the terrorist attack, saying they had already litigated their case in an earlier lawsuit.
