Lawyers for a proposed class hit back Tuesday in New Jersey federal court against claims they should be sanctioned for actions during discovery in a suit accusing BASF Catalysts LLC and Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP of destroying evidence that BASF talc contained asbestos, saying the manufacturer was attempting to improperly extend the scope of the case.

BASF Catalysts LLC called on a New Jersey federal court Monday to sanction counsel for the plaintiffs in a class action accusing it of conspiring with Cahill Gordon & Reindel LLP to destroy evidence and conceal the fact that BASF's products contained asbestos, saying the attorneys' behavior during a recent deposition interfered with the discovery process and BASF's ability to defend itself.
