A New York federal judge on Wednesday approved a deal to settle American Express Co.'s trademark and unfair competition spat with Black Card LLC over the "Blackcard" mark.

American Express Marketing & Development Corp. on Thursday convinced the New York federal judge overseeing its trademark and unfair competition suit that rival Black Card LLC's "Blackcard" trademark should be canceled because the mark is merely descriptive.
