A California federal judge on Thursday denied attempts by American Express Co. to quash a putative class action brought by workers who claim the credit card giant misclassified nonmanagerial employees in order to avoid paying them overtime wages.

American Express Co. and its travel agency subsidiary were hit with a proposed class action Monday accusing them of wrongly classifying nonmanagerial employees to avoid paying them overtime salary, in violation of federal and California labor laws.
