A class of California truck drivers lost a bid Wednesday to have employer Vitran Express Inc.'s' written policies on rest and meal breaks declared defective on their face when a federal judge said even if he found them invalid, such a ruling would be immaterial to the outcome of the case.

A pair of local-area truck drivers won class certification in California federal court Thursday after a judge found sufficiently universal more than a dozen driver declarations asserting that meal and rest breaks were illegally discouraged and thwarted by Vitran Express Inc.
