A Rhode Island federal judge on Tuesday granted Providence Washington Insurance Co.'s bid to toss a dispute over its duty to defend New England Container Co. against claims that it damaged a Superfund site, saying Providence's coverage of the company did not overlap with the period of the alleged damage.

A Rhode Island judge ruled Tuesday that Providence Washington Insurance Co. Inc. isn't required to contribute to reimbursement paid by fellow insurer Travelers Casualty and Surety Co. Inc. to cover a policyholder's defense costs in a pair of Superfund cleanup liability lawsuits.
