A Kentucky coal mining company has agreed to pay $245,000 and amend its hiring practices to settle a racial discrimination suit in Kentucky federal court brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency announced Thursday.

An Alliance Resource Partners unit asked a Kentucky federal judge Wednesday to toss a suit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, arguing that the agency had failed to support its claim that the mine refused to hire a class of black applicants.
