Pfizer Inc. on Monday asked a New York federal court to stay an action over birth defects allegedly caused by the antidepressant Zoloft, part of a push to simplify things while a federal panel decides whether to consolidate nearly 60 related cases.

Pfizer Inc. was hit with multiple lawsuits Wednesday in New York federal court alleging it failed to adequately warn patients that its antidepressant Zoloft could cause birth defects in children whose mothers ingested the drug during their pregnancies.
