International Paper Co. and a Georgia-Pacific LLC unit on Friday asked a New Jersey federal judge to reopen a case that was administratively closed in July when the companies agreed to try mediation that has since failed with the consumer packaging company they sued over Superfund cleanup as part of a decades-old spinoff deal.

International Paper Co. and a Georgia-Pacific LLC unit lodged a suit Friday against a consumer packaging company, claiming it should help pay for the cleanup of a New Jersey Superfund site under a 40-year-old spin-off agreement.
