A Washington federal court gave Texas the green light Monday to immediately appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court its rejection of Texas' bid for approval of its voter identification law, but also stayed the case until the high court rules whether a section of the Voting Rights Act is constitutional.

A Washington federal court on Thursday rejected Texas' bid for approval of a law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls, saying the burden to obtain identification would unfairly affect minority voters.
