SNA Carbon LLC, a partner in a joint venture with a unit of bankrupt RG Steel LLC that owned a steelmaking facility in West Virginia, cannot be held liable by the U.S. government for alleged environmental damage at the site, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

Despite the steelmaker's ongoing bankruptcy, a West Virginia federal judge on Monday allowed the U.S. government to move forward with a lawsuit against an RG Steel LLC unit for alleged violations of air pollution and hazardous waste laws.

The U.S. government sued RG Steel Wheeling LLC in West Virginia federal court on Monday, alleging the steel manufacturer released high concentrations of particulates into the air and mishandled hazardous waste dozens of times over a four-year period.
