Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. ducked parts of a contract-breach and copyright-infringement suit levied by owners of the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" enterprise over a film adaptation, after a California judicial referee found Tuesday that Fox's payments were advances.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. couldn't dodge a suit for contract breach and copyright infringement the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" enterprise brought for the film "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," after a California federal court on Wednesday ruled there were questions of fact surrounding their production agreement.
