Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the stylized "Hope" portrait that was an iconic image of President Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, was sentenced Friday in New York to probation for destroying evidence that he used a copyrighted Associated Press photo as inspiration.

Artist Shepard Fairey told a New York federal judge on Wednesday that he shouldn't receive a $3.2 million criminal fine for faking evidence in a copyright dispute with the Associated Press over the source of his iconic "Hope" image of Barack Obama.
