Three environmental groups embroiled in litigation with two Alpha Natural Resources Inc. subsidiaries over conductivity pollution at four of its surface coal mines told a West Virginia federal court Monday that they had reached an agreement under which the company will be held accountable for future pollution.

Alpha Units Found Liable For W.Va. Mining Permit Violations
A federal judge on Wednesday found "overwhelming scientific evidence" that ionic pollution from four Alpha Natural Resources Inc. surface coal mines had damaged aquatic life in two West Virginia creeks in violation of their state-issued effluent discharge permits.
