A former Ford product design engineer has prevailed in her suit alleging she was wrongly denied disability benefits, with a Michigan federal judge finding that her failure to comply with certain reporting requirements in her disability plan was caused by her mental illness.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider arguments by UniCare Life and Health Insurance Co. that a Sixth Circuit refusal to amend its revival of a former Ford employee's disability insurance suit was improperly based on the "spirit" of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act and will only deter employer-sponsored benefits.

The Sixth Circuit on Friday revived a former Ford employee's suit against UniCare Life and Health Insurance in which she said she was intentionally denied disability benefits after being terminated.
