A California federal judge ruled Friday that Ray Charles' children could reclaim the rights to some of his songs, tossing a suit lodged by the singer's foundation, which alleged the children's efforts violated an agreement they made with their father before he died.

Ray Charles' charitable foundation should be allowed to sue seven of the late singer's children for trying to reclaim the copyrights to some of his songs from a music publisher because the heirs' conduct is not protected under a California free-speech law, an attorney for the foundation argued on Monday.
